FAMILY SKETCH

Paternal: The surnames in my paternal line are Biterman and Fuks. The family came to the U.S. in January, 1948 on the ship Marine Marlin from Germany to the port of New York. The family is Jewish. The emigrant ancestors were my grandparents, Judka and Tauba (Fuks) Biterman, Holocaust survivors.

The family came from southeastern Poland -- the towns of Chelm, Hrubieszow, and Zamosc near the border of modern day Ukraine. My grandmother's family was Ashkenaz; my grandfather's family was Sephardic.

Maternal: My mother's family has been in the U.S. for a longer period of time. The family is Roman Catholic, but two branches of the family may have Protestant ancestors. The first-known emigrant ancestor is my maternal grandfather's great-grandparents, Peter Kolb and his wife Theresia (Buckenmeyer) Kolb, who emigrated with their children (Jacob, Peter, Lorenz, Theresia) in 1846 from LeHavre, France to New York. They settled in Wyoming County, New York.

A different branch of my grandfather's ancestry, great-great-great grandfather Heinrich Doll, emigrated with wife Gertrud and children in 1848 from Germany to New York. The Doll family settled in Washington County, Wisconsin.

In 1853, my grandmother's great-grand parents, Sebastian and Maria Elisabetha (Maier) Hirschboeck (along with children Damion, Georg, Viktoria, Johan) emigrated from LeHavre to New York on the ship Tempest. The Hirschboeck family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but moved to Washington County in 1855.

My grandmother's great-granduncle, John Reichl, emigrated on the ship Albert in May, 1854 and settled in Michigan. His sister, great-great-great-grandmother Ottilie Reichl, came in June, 1857 on the ship Attrena. She traveled alone.

In 1856, my grandfather's great-grandparents Theodor and Anna (Kelbing) Frank emigrated and settled in New York. In 1858, grandfather Russell Kolb's great-grandaunt Anna Maria Doll emigrated and came to Washington County, Wisconsin.

In 1878, great-great-grandmother Katharina Pecher emigrated from the Czech Republic (then a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire) and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She married Peter Kolb.

Great-great-granduncle Charles Lemberger emigrated in 1880 from Bavaria to New York, traveling alone. His father, Josef, came in 1881. Josef's wife, Thekla (Vogl) Lemberger, then emigrated in May, 1885 on the ship Werra with children Maria, Caroline, Martha, Josefa, Josef, and Ferdinand. The Lemberger family settled in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

Finally, in February, 1911, my grandmother's maternal family came to the U.S.; great-grand-step-father Joseph Marsel emigrated with wife Antonia (Vehovar) Marsel and children Louis and Antonia on the ship S.S. Lorraine. They settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Great-great-great-grandparents Gerhard and Anna Sybilla (Römer) Kaiser are emigrant ancestors that I have been unable to determine emigration information about.
