FAMILY ORIGINS

The Lipp / Lipps family originated in Western Germany in the province of Nordrhein-Westphalen, in the villages of Hochkirchen, Dorweiler (Norvenich), and Eggersheim.

HOCHKIRCHEN, GERMANY

Hochkirchen, which literally translates to "high church", is part of the municipality of Nörvenich. The village includes two mom and pop shops with a bakery, a cemetery, and the historic St. Viktor's Catholic Church. The village website is www.Noervenich.de.

The village lies just east of highway 477 and 1 kilometer south of Nörvenich. The Neffelbach flows through the village. The population of the village in 1794 was 155, in 1855 was 340, and is currently 401.

NÖRVENICH, BINSFELD, and ROMMELSHEIM

Dorweiler is a hamlet within Nörvenich which is embedded between the Erft and the Neffelbach, tributaries of the Rhine River. It's population is around 200. As with most villages in the area, agriculture has always been the main occupation of residents. Since ancient times there were small and medium-sized farms that were farmed in traditional ways.

Binsfeld is a part of the municipality Nörvenich in the district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia. The population in 1885 was just 629 and the current population is 950. It is the western-most district of the municipality and adjacent to the city of Düren.

Until 1969, Rommelsheim and Binsfeld were originally part of the same municipality. A small river called the Ellebach flows through the village of Rommelsheim. The population is around 550.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Lipp originates from a German pet form of the personal name Philipp/Philip.

The surname Crantz likely originates from the Middle High German kranz meaning 'garland' or 'wreath'. It was a metonymic occupational name for a maker of chaplets and wreaths, a habitational name for someone who lived at a house distinguished by the sign of a garland, or a nickname for someone whose hair was tonsured.

The surname Brunsfeldt may be a variation of Braunfeld, or "brown field".

The surname Fassbender was an occupational name for a cooper from the Middle High German faz meaning 'cask' or 'barrel' + binder meaning 'joiner'. This was a term used in northern Germany.
