Frison Family Genealogy

The Frison family migrated from the Palatinate in Germany to Alsace, France sometime between 1742 and 1760. The information on the family came from the film number 367519 for Maikammer, Germany.

Maikammer, Germany.

The family was Roman Catholic. Both Raymund Frison and his son Ludovicus Frison were chirurgus by occupation, which translates to "surgeon." In a small towns like Maikammer or Riedseltz, they would have most likely been wound doctors.

Maikammer is located in the Rhineland-Pfaltz province of Germany and has a current population of 4,000 people. The Naturpark Pfalzer Wald, located to the south and west of Maikammer, is a natural park with an area of 177,100 hectares. It is located in the southern part of the Rhineland-Palatinate. With a forest share of 76%, the Palatinate Forest is the largest contiguous forest in the Federal Republic of Germany and has an impressive stained sandstone landscape. To travel from Maikammer to Altenstadt, France (where the family migrated) one would have to go south through Edenkoben, Desheim, Essingen, and Laudau in Germany and Steinfeld, France. Driving from where the family lived in Germany to where Joannes Frison and Maria Weiland married, in Altenstadt in 1860, would take 40 minutes.

The family likely spoke German, but because they moved to France, many of the records use their French names. Thus, Johannes Ludovicus Frison may have been documented as Jean Louis Frison.

The surname Frison has French origins and is an ethnic name from frison or "Frisian". Frisia extends from the northwestern Netherlands across northwestern Germany to the border of Denmark. The surname Weiland is a variant of the German Wieland, from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements wig or "war" and land or "land". This name was borne by the supernaturally skilled smith of Germanic folk legend, and for this reason it may in part have been given as a nickname to blacksmiths.

(Special note of thanks to Charles Sheridan, who provided a translation of the Maikammer records.)
