Thompson has EARNED your vote

Thompson's a long shot

The Badger Herald (Madison, Wis.)

Published Opinion.

September 4, 2002.

Sept. 10 is a make-or-break day for one important Wisconsin campaign. Ed Thompson, Libertarian candidate for governor, and running mate state Rep. Marty Reynolds need to garner 6 percent on Sept. 10 to qualify for approximately $210,000 from the State Campaign Fund. If this threshold is reached, it would allow the most visible third-party campaign in the country greater visibility the rest of the way.

Being able to access the State Election Fund is crucial for lesser-known candidates such as Ed Thompson; however, the State Elections Board makes it near impossible for them. The state election law requiring people to vote a straight-party ticket is another law created by the career politicians to make it near impossible for third parties to qualify for funds that the major parties are almost assured.

The 54 percent of the populace who did not vote in the last election must come out to vote in 2002. Students need to vote en masse to "shake things up." But they should not vote for career bureaucrats McCallum, Doyle, Barrett, or Falk. Instead, they should cast a principled vote for Libertarian Ed Thompson.

Ed Thompson says it best: "If this election can be earned, we have a shot at it. If this election can be bought, we won't have a chance." Vote Ed Thompson on Sept. 10.
