Reimer/Riemer Family Genealogy

FAMILY ORIGINS

The surname Reimer was also spelled Riemer and Roemer. The family lived in Eggersheim, south of Hochkirchen, and Nörvenich in the North Rhine-Westphalia province. The family was Roman Catholic.

Nörvenich has a population of around 12,000. In 1794 the village population was 122, in 1885 it was 234, and in 2010 it remained 232.

The original St. Medardus Church of Nörvenich was destroyed in 1642. From 1658 to 1664, the church was re-built from scratch. This is where ancestors Mathias Reimer and Elizabetha Braurs were married in 1761. The three-brick building has a prominent West Tower and a closing three eastern choir. The pulpit, crafted in 1667, is a particularly outstanding testimony Baroque craftsmanship. The church features many more examples of Baroque art in the 17th Century, including the baptism, altars, and confessionals.

IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA

Gerhard and Anna Sybilla (Reimer) Kaiser were the emigrant ancestors, departing from LeHavre, France and arriving at the port of New York on May 12, 1851 on the ship Dorcas Prince. The listed destination was Ohio, but by the 1860 census the family had settled in Washington County, Wisconsin.

LIVING IN WISCONSIN

The family resided in Washington County, Wisconsin near Saint Lawrence and Addison, Wisconsin. The Saint Lawrence Catholic Church is located at the southeast corner of Hwy. 175 and Hwy. K in Saint Lawrence, Wisconsin. Saint Lawrence (different than St. Lawrence) is near Hartford in Washington County. The church was founded in 1846 by the Rev. Charles Schraudenbach, who was also the first resident pastor. The courthouse for Saint Lawrence was located in Port Washington. The current population is around 740 people. Addison is a tiny community in Washington County with a current population of around 3,000. It is still a farming community to this day. To the immediate east is Allenton. Further south are the larger communities of Hartford and Slinger.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Reimer is from a Germanic personal name, a reduced form of Reinmar, composed of the elements hrud or "renown" and mari, or "fame".

The surname Gartz and its variants are likely derived from a locality. There is a place near Euskirchen in the Mechernich called Obergartzem, and in this place there are places called "Gartzemer Street" and "Gartzemer Way". This location is about 30 minutes south of where my ancestors lived.
