Speech Summary: Communication Tips for Libertarians

Speech summary. Original Speech (c) Sharon Harris.

Communication Tips

* Bansburger Pivot: A transition between tough questions posed to Libertarians; (1)listen closely to what the person posing the question says, (2) listen to figure out what the person'(s') concern is, (3) prove to people that -- despite what they think -- your intentions aren't bad, and (4) have a transitional statement;

* Libertarian Denominator: When asked if you are conservative or liberal, instead of the standard response (Libertarians tend to be conservative on fiscal issues and liberal on social issues), respond: "Conservatives tend to be libertarian on fiscal issues; liberals tend to be libertarian on social issues."

* Be a good neighbor: Cooperate, get involved in your communities, and be a friendly, nice, genuine, and interested neighbor;

* Make careful word choices: Your word choices have a great meaning and influence on people, so choose your words wisely. (1) Heavy, emotional words can turn people off, (2) Offer alternatives to traditional libertarian words (abolish = replace, abolish = privatize, legalization = relegalization, abolish public schools = reprivatizing government schools, capitalism = free-market), (3) we aren't radical or extreme, we're simply BOLD (use words that are bold, such as empowerment and voluntary cooperation);

* Political crossdressing: It's important to know your audience; 70% of listeners will be sensory listeners (not intuitive thinkers). Therefore, you must use specifics, examples, and stories; blanket statements simply will do more harm than good;

* Learn short answers: If you're given just 30 seconds, you must provide a bold libertarian solution in the alotted time period;
