SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Hunigers was also spelled Honnigen, Hoeningen, Hunigars, Huenigars, Huenigers, Huniger, Huningen, Hunigen, and Hueningen. The surname Hoenig is a pet form of the personal name Heinrich. The name Honingen may be a place name from the village of Honningen, a municipality in the district of Ahrweiler. The location has a population of about 1,100 and is about 45 minutes southeast from Geich. It is unclear what the surname Hunigers derives from or means.

The surname Engel could have a variety of meanings: (1) From a German personal name like Engelbert or Engelhard; (2) From Ing, the name of a Germanic god or folk hero; (3) From living at a house bearing the sign of an angel; or (4) From Angle, a Germanic tribe living on the Jutland peninsula. In the 5th-6th centuries, the Angles invaded eastern and northern Britain and gave their name to England.

The surname Hagenlaeger could have a variety of meanings. From the German hag, which means "protected place" + laeger or "physician" = protected or valuable healer.

Raths is a Swiss-German variation of Rath, which has several possible origins: 1) Habitational name from any of various places called Rath, which derives from Middle Low German roden/raden or "to clear land for cultivation"; 2) From a short form of any of the various Germanic compound personal names formed with rad or rat, to "counsel" or provide "advice" as the first element; or 3) A descriptive epithet for a wise person or counselor, from the Middle High German rat or "advice."
