ED THOMPSON ENTERS RACE

11/13/2001

Following a statewide listening campaign, Tomah mayor Ed Thompson plans to announce his bid for Governor of Wisconsin as a Libertarian Thursday Nov. 15 during a whirlwind tour of the state. Thompson, a long-time small business owner is running a campaign on a platform of what he calls, "common sense government."

Thompson will make the initial announcement Thursday morning on the steps of the capitol building in Madison followed by an announcement tour of six other Wisconsin cities.

Thompson and five members of his staff, including his 22-year-old son Joshua Thompson, will depart Madison and fly to Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wausau, Superior, Eau Claire and end up in Sparta.

"My first priority as governor will be to get Wisconsin off the list of the top 10 highest taxing states in the country," he said.

"At the same time that the economy is forcing families to tighten their belts, Wisconsin's state government passed its largest budget ever," he said.

"For the past year, people have been telling me they're ready for a change," he said. "People are ready for a breath of fresh air in Wisconsin politics. Recent publicity about the corruption in the state caucuses has shown that corruption in Wisconsin government is far greater than even the harshest critics expected."

"High taxes and over-regulation are crippling Wisconsin's small businesses. I hear from far too many parents that their children have had to leave the state to find a decent job. We need to focus on bringing family wage jobs back to Wisconsin," he said.

Due to the busy announcement tour, Thompson will be available only to give a brief statement and answer a small number of questions about his upcoming campaign at each stop.

Thompson will conclude his announcement with a rally of local supporters at the Oasis Supper Club on Highway 21 east of Sparta. Thompson will be available Friday, November 16.
