THOMPSON SUPPORTS CAUCUS LAWSUIT 12/9/2001. Ed Thompson, Libertarian candidate for Governor of Wisconsin, supports the lawsuit filed by Common Cause seeking to block further payments of legal bills in the Legislative Caucus scandal. "It’s bad enough the leaders of both major political parties have ripped-off taxpayers to fund their campaigns," said Thompson. "Now they expect us to pay for high-priced lawyers to help bury their mess." "This is corruption plain and simple, and it has to stop. What Common Cause is seeking is just common sense." Thompson offered to join the lawsuit, but Common Cause Director Jay Heck wanted to keep sponsorship of the action non-partisan. "I understand and respect their desire to not include political candidates as plaintiffs. But I am glad this lawsuit was filed on behalf of Wisconsin taxpayers," said Thompson. "Our campaign is ready to file lawsuits, agitate, and do whatever is necessary to stop the Republicr! ats from stealing our tax money and our democracy." Ed Thompson also supports the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign’s efforts to reform the state Elections Board. The Elections Board, along with the Ethics Board, cut a deal with the Legislative leaders to drop their investigation into the Caucus scandal. "It‘s like having the fox watch the hen house," said Thompson. "I agree with the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign’s proposal that the Elections Board should either be completely non-partisan or have members drawn from all political parties with ballot status. All it represents now is the interests of the Republicrats, not the people of Wisconsin." |
