THOMPSON OUTRAGED BY STATE SENATE BILL TO BAN GUNS 1/20/2002. Ed Thompson, City of Tomah mayor and Libertarian candidate for governor, today told Wisconsinites attending a Fond du Lac gun show that he is outraged by state Senate Bill 363's attempt to ban the use of most guns in Wisconsin. "The threat of terrorism is very real, and we must respond to it with force and determination," said Thompson, "but the terrorism threat does not justify throwing people in prison for owning guns or for using them for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, and self-defense. "This attempt to take guns away from peaceful people is outrageous. The state of Wisconsin should be protecting us from terrorists and criminals, not taking away our ability to defend ourselves. The worst terrorist attack in American history did not even involve a single gun. "I am encouraged by Senator Dave Zien taking a lead in exposing the threat to gun ownership in Senator Jim Baumgart's bill. I agree with Senator Zien that this sure looks like more back-door politics from Attorney General James Doyle."
