Vogl / Vogel Family Genealogy

FAMILY ORIGINS

The Vogl family resided in Lam, Germany. The family was Roman Catholic.

Little is known about the first Georg Vogl, born in the early 1700s, except that he was living in Frahels in Lam and both he and his wife Anna died after 1764. His son Johannes Georg Vogl and Anna Maria Neumayr had three boys and three girls. The godparents of the boys were Johann Georg Lieb, Eva Liebl, and Johann Georg Geider, weaver from Frahels. Anna Maria Neumayer was from Ottenzell, north of Arrach and west of Lam.

Michael Vogl and Anna Maria Traurig had four children, three of whom lived to adulthood. Joseph Aschenbrenner from Silbersbach was the godfather of all of their children. Their son Joseph Vogl, husband of Anna Pritzl and father of Thekla Vogel, was a carpenter. It is believed that this generation of the family had considerable wealth.

SURNAME ORIGINS

The surname Vogl is a nickname for a happy person or someone who liked to sing, or a metonymic occupational name for a bird catcher, from the Middle High German/Middle Low German vogel, or "bird".

The surname Neumayr is a distinguishing name for a newly appointed steward or tenant farmer, or one who was a newcomer to an area, from the Middle High German niuwe or "new" + meier or "steward" or "tenant farmer".

The surname Traurig is an ornamental name from traurig, meaning "sad".

It is unclear what the surname Zissler means or from where it derives.

* It is unclear which Georg Vogl and Anna are the parents of Johannes Georg Vogl. On July 26, 1740 a Johann Georg Vogl was born in Lam, but he was an illegitimate child of Anna Ziszler, a servant and Fahles, and Georg Vogl, herdsman in Kotzting. The names and dates match, but the child was illegitimate and in a later record Johann Georg was listed as legitimate. On May 5, 1739, a Georg Vogl married Anna Bardl in Lam. No children named Georg are listed for this couple, but the names and dates also match. Anna Bardl was the daughter of miner Johannes Bard (or Bendt) from Bodenmais. Georg Vogl was the son of Christoph Vogl and his wife Maria.

** Anna Maria Neumayer/Neumayr is the daughter of Johann Georg Neumayr, coachman and wagonbuilder, from Haibuhl (Arrach) and his wife Eva. Both were deceased by 1764. Anna Maria may have lived or been born in Ottenzell.

*** Maria Traurig is the daughter of Joseph Traurig, a carpenter from Lam, and his wife Anna Maria Roßperger, daughter of Caspar Rossperger. The surname Roszperger may have also been spelled Rossberger, Roszberger, Roßberger, and Roßperger. It is extremely uncommon.
