In 1994, Thompson faced Chuck Chvala (a lawyer and career politician). In 1998, Thompson faced Ed Garvey (a lawyer). Now the time is 2002. For the Democrats, it is either Tom Barrett (a lawyer and 18-year career politician), James Doyle (a lawyer and 18-year career politician), Kathleen Falk (a lawyer and 5-year politician), or Gary George (a lawyer and 22-year career politician). For the Republicans, it is Scott McCallum (a 26-year career politician). Enter Ed Thompson. Boxer. Union worker. Railroad worker. Insurance salesman. Bartender. Restaurateur. Grocer. Butcher.
